Beach Cleanup at Foz do Lizandro - November 3, 2024
On November 3, 2024, we had the pleasure of organizing a new beach cleanup at Foz do Lizandro, a beautiful spot unfortunately too often cluttered with waste. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with ALP, ALPbrought together a team of 30 to 40 volunteers, all driven by the desire to help preserve our coastal environment.
The operation lasted about an hour and a half.We enjoyed a peaceful atmosphere, surrounded by many surfers and families having a great time on the beach. This ideal setting highlighted the importance of educating future generations about preserving our planet and respecting our oceans. Wildsuits is happy and proud to participate in these actions that combine ecological commitment and awareness, uniting nature lovers and surf enthusiasts for a common goal.
Detailed Collection Report
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we managed to collect a significant amount of waste, broken down as follows:
- 28 kg of plastic and metal: These materials, frequently found among marine debris, pose a direct threat to local wildlife. As a comparison, during our previous cleanup in August, we collected 20 kg of plastic and metal, which demonstrates the importance of carrying out these actions regularly to reduce their accumulation.
- 8 kg of mixed waste: A mix of small items and litter left on the beach. Comparatively, last June we collected 5 kg, indicating a concerning increase. This reminds us how essential it is to raise awareness about non-recyclable waste.
- 4 kg of glass: Though recyclable, abandoned glass can be hazardous for beachgoers and animals. The number is similar to our previous cleanup, yet remains worrisome, particularly for the safety of families and children visiting this beach.
In total, 40 kg of waste was removed from the beach in an hour and a half. This impressive result sadly underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to combat pollution.
Why These Actions Are Essential
Beyond simply picking up litter, our presence on the beach mainly aims to raise public awareness of the devastating effects of marine pollution. Each person who participates in these actions not only contributes to making the beach cleaner but also spreads awareness to those around them. We believe that every effort counts and that by joining forces, we can work towards a healthier, more natural environment.
Marine debris, especially plastic, poses a serious threat to coastal ecosystems. Here are some key statistics to better understand the impact of this pollution and the need to act:
- 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, equivalent to one garbage truck every minute.
- 500 years: This is the average time it takes for a plastic bottle to decompose in the ocean, releasing microplastics that contaminate the marine environment.
- 70% of marine debris sinks and is thus never collected, making beach cleanups essential to recover the remaining 30% that washes up on shores.
- Every second, 200 kg of plastic is dumped into the oceans, highlighting the urgency to reduce plastic usage and clean up our beaches.
Though occasional, these cleanup actions contribute to a broader effort to protect marine ecosystems and collective awareness. Our mission is to help everyone understand that a cleaner environment is possible if we each recognize the importance of our daily actions.
A Word on the Future
This beach cleanup won’t be the last! We plan to repeat this experience in the coming months and hope to welcome even more motivated participants. Stay tuned to find out the date of our next beach cleanup, and feel free to join us to continue making a difference. Together, we can preserve the beauty of Foz do Lizandro and all the beaches we love.
A big thank you again to all the volunteers and partners like ALP who make these initiatives possible. Wildsuits will continue to actively engage to keep our beaches clean and safe for everyone, inspiring each generation to take care of our environment.

Beach Cleanup at Foz do Lizandro - may 11, 2024
On May 11, 2024, a significant event brought the Ericeira community together on Praia da Foz do Lizandro beach. Organized by Wildsuits, in collaboration with Movimento ALP and Sea Shepherdthis cleanup day aimed not only to purify the coastline but also to strengthen community ties. Local merchants, residents, and several committed brands united in this collective effort, demonstrating the importance of community action in environmental preservation.
The Crucial Importance of Fighting Plastic Pollution
Plastic pollution continues to represent one of the most urgent environmental challenges. Each year, millions of tons of plastic waste are dumped into our oceans, endangering marine wildlife and coastal ecosystems. These plastics persist for centuries, fragmenting into microplastics that contaminate the food chain, ultimately reaching us. In the face of this omnipresent threat, beach cleanups are vital to raise awareness and encourage a reduction in plastic production and consumption.
A Saturday Like No Other
This cleanup was not an ordinary event. On the beach, 122 kg of waste were collected, the majority of which was plastic, illustrating the extent of pollution that persists despite ongoing cleanup efforts by local authorities. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and collective commitment, proving that the community can play a transformative role in the fight against environmental pollution.
The Day in Detail: Togetherness and Awareness
For Wildsuitsaccustomed to organizing beach cleanups, each event remains unique thanks to the enthusiasm and participation of local communities. The moments spent together on the beach go beyond picking up trash; they also serve as a catalyst to raise awareness about the importance of caring for our coastline. The day was marked by a spirit of solidarity, shared laughter, and a common determination to make a difference.
A Lasting Impact Beyond the Beach
Cleanup efforts, though critical, are only the first step toward deeper change. It is crucial to continue our commitment through education and awareness of the dangers of plastic pollution. By promoting sustainable alternatives and more responsible waste management practices, we can begin to address the problem at its source. Actions like these should not be seen as isolated solutions but as components of a comprehensive strategy for a cleaner and greener future.
Conclusion and Thanks
Wildsuits expresses its gratitude to all participants, especially to Luisa for her crucial role in documenting and organizing the event. The company is proud of these initiatives and continues to invite the community to actively engage in protecting our beaches and oceans.
